What is Summer Independent Study?

Summer Independent Study (SIS) courses allow you to complete your coursework without being tied to a classroom. While all courses use Blackboard, no two courses are necessarily the same. One course may consist of reading the required books and writing papers about the material, while another may require minimal writing, but frequent online coursework. The course content is up to the professor, and it is important that you meet with your professor or read through the course syllabus prior to enrolling so that you know what will be expected of you.

Advertising to Women’s Studies and lots of classes in between, there’s something offered in SIS that you need. All this, conveniently available to you without setting foot on campus over the summer.

Please note:

  • You may take only two SIS courses in one summer.
  • SIS classes do not qualify as resident credit, and do not count toward the requirement that at least 30 of the last 36 hours of credit needed for a degree must be registered for and completed in residence.
  • SIS hours do not apply toward full-time enrollment status and are not completed in time to meet requirements for August UNL graduation.

Why should I take Summer Independent Study?
Students choose Summer Independent Study courses because of the flexibility and convenience they offer.

SIS courses are not taken in a classroom, and can be completed from virtually anywhere. This is especially useful for students that won’t be living in Lincoln over the summer. Students can study abroad, travel, or work from anywhere, all while earning UNL credits with Summer Independent Study. However, SIS courses are also great for students who will be living in Lincoln throughout the summer, but need a little extra flexibility. Many of the students that take SIS courses work full or part time in Lincoln, or want to add more credit hours to their campus-based schedule.
