Legal Studies Certificate overview
The online Agriculture & Natural Resources Legal Studies undergraduate certificate provides practical experience in environmental regulations relating to agriculture and natural resources.
Certificate learning objectives:
- Improve natural resources management and enhance environmental quality
- Successfully work with agricultural landowners to protect natural resources
- Gain practical experience in business and legal aspects of agriculture, agribusiness, water management and environmental regulations
- Understand the impact of environmental regulations and policies on agribusiness, pollution, habitats and endangered species
- Understand the impact of water regulations on water use, surface and groundwater, wetlands, water quality and water rights
- In-depth knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding risk assessments, environmental impact, pollution controls, land use and energy policies
- International environmental disputes and interrelationships between trade policies and international environment protection policies

Courses:
The 12 credit hour Agricultural & Natural Resources Legal Studies Certificate consists of four required, three-credit-hour courses:
AECN 256, Legal Aspects in Agriculture (3 credits)
Focuses on the legal aspects of agriculture: taxation, contracts, property rights, buying and selling real estate, condemnation, land use regulations, leases, co-ownership, par¬t¬ner¬ships, corporations, commercial transactions, credit, liability, insurance, estate planning, water law, and agricultural regulations.
AECN 357, Natural Resource and Environmental Law (3 credits)
Focuses on environmental impact review; air and water pollution control, solid and hazardous waste control, endangered species protection, and habitat protection.
AECN 456, Environmental Law (3 credits)
Covers administrative law, risk assessment, environmental impact review, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, non-point source pollution control, wetlands regulations, pesticide and toxic substance regulation, solid and hazardous waste regulations, drinking water protection, land use regulation, energy policy, and international environmental law.
AECN 457, Water Law (3 credits)
This course deals with: the eastern and western state water laws, the public trust doctrine, the im-pact of endangered species on water use, wetlands regulations, surface and ground water rights, Indian and federal water rights, and the impact water quality regulations on water allocation.

Admission requirements
Students must meet the admission requirements for entering freshmen.
Application procedure
Once all materials have been received, you will be notified by mail of your admission status.
Required by the Undergraduate Office of Admissions
- Complete a "Non-Degree Undergraduate Certificate" application.
- Pay the $45 application fee.
- Mail official high school graduation transcripts or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) directly from the high school or testing agency which issued the diploma to the Office of Admissions.
Certificate completion verification process
- Apply to the director of the certificate program for the review and certificate
- Director of the certificate program reviews earned academic credits
- Certificate completion appears on UNL transcripts
