Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is distance education?
A. Distance education is a means for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to extend the campus to students around the globe. By using such technology as the Internet and videoconferencing, UNL is able to provide, students around the world with our curriculum regardless of time or place. UNL's distance education programs include both synchronous (meaning teacher and student communicate in real time) and asynchronous (meaning the student and teacher do not communicate at the same time). Some programs are self-paced, often called independent study, which means students are largely responsible for reading course material at their own pace while the teacher grades assignments, tests and provides instructional feedback.
Q. What does the Office of Extended Education & Outreach do?
A. Extended Education & Outreach (EE&O) is the dedicated unit on campus for distance education. The EE&O staff develop & design distance education courses, assist faculty in course and program development, register students for courses, recruit distance students, assist students with questions and provide support for the campus.
